Review CUSTOMER SERVICE

I just finished reading "Customer Service: A Novel" by Dena Darvish Derakhshan, and wow, what a ride! I went in with pretty low expectations, honestly, but I was completely charmed. The book follows Derek Gilan, a young man whose post-high school life takes a decidedly unexpected turn – or rather, a series of unexpected turns – away from his dreams and into the often-frustrating world of customer service. And let me tell you, Derakhshan perfectly captures the absurdity and the occasional soul-crushing monotony of those jobs.

What really struck me was Derek himself. He’s a compelling character. The author’s description mentioned him sounding "too smart to be just out of high school," and I completely agree. He possesses a sharp wit and a cynical outlook that feels both relatable and surprisingly funny, given the often-grim circumstances he finds himself in. He's not your typical protagonist; he's flawed, often makes poor choices, and yet, you can't help but root for him. He reminds me of a modern, slightly more cynical Huckleberry Finn, or maybe even a younger, less eccentric Jeff Goldblum – that same quick intelligence and slightly mischievous glint in his eye shines through the pages.

Derakhshan's writing style is also a major strength. She has a knack for setting scenes and establishing character with remarkable efficiency. There's a brevity and precision to her prose that keeps the story moving at a brisk pace, even when things are slow and frustrating for Derek. She doesn't waste words, and each sentence feels deliberate and impactful. It’s a style that’s both easy to read and surprisingly immersive; I found myself completely drawn into Derek’s world and his various customer service misadventures.

The humor is another delightful element. There are genuinely funny moments scattered throughout the book, providing much-needed levity amidst the more serious themes of navigating adulthood, pursuing your dreams, and the constant struggle to make ends meet. The comedic elements never overshadow the more poignant aspects of the story, instead serving to enhance the overall reading experience and to make Derek's struggles all the more endearing.

Beyond the entertainment value, I also found myself unexpectedly reflecting on my own experiences with customer service, both as a provider and a recipient. The book offered a unique perspective on the often-overlooked human element in these interactions, highlighting the pressures and frustrations felt on both sides of the counter. In a way, it enhanced my understanding of – and my empathy for – those working in customer-facing roles. It also gave me a few new strategies for navigating those inevitably frustrating customer service calls.

In short, "Customer Service: A Novel" is a surprisingly insightful and genuinely funny read. It exceeded my expectations in every way, offering a compelling character, a sharp writing style, and a surprisingly thought-provoking look at the often-overlooked corners of modern life. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a lighthearted yet meaningful story that will leave you feeling entertained, and maybe even a little bit more understanding. I'm so glad I bought it!
